ABSTRACT

The popularity of the retro drama represented by <Yugnammae> did not start abruptly in the mid-1990s. There has been a steady movement to reproduce the past through the media and utilizing it for marketing, but it was popular throughout society and became a central genre of drama because of the economic crisis in the late 1990s. Broadcasters chose retro dramas instead of trendy dramas in order to calm the controversy of publicity and keep pace with the economic downturn, and viewers who faced a sudden crisis responded more to retro dramas. It was often used to emphasize women's sacrifices and to rebuild traditional family images, or to beautify the negative legacy of the past by resetting the collective memories of the past. However, watching retro dramas reproducing the poor times, viewers felt longing for those days, and they were comforted by the current poverty, and they also recalled the lesson of “frugality saving”. It clearly shows what the public was expecting from a television drama amid the economic crisis.
