AB - This article is about Wang Fu(王符)’s perception of dream in the QianFuLun(潛夫論) “Meng Lie”(夢列). Wang Fu was a confucian scholar who lived in Later Han period. he is the author of the QianFuLun. By analyzing "Menglie," I could understand the Wang Fu's perspective about dreams. Han period was a time when the Confucianism developed, and the religious atmosphere was abundant. At that time, ‘prediction one's dream’ which was conducted in the royal court before, began to be popular in the private sector.
Wang Fu had a critical view of sorcery, shamanism, physiognomy, etc. Although he acknowledged their existence and utility, it was a limited one that was allowed in yin-yang and five elements thoughts. Ironically, however, Wang Fu’s critical perspective of dreams become a remarkable dream theory. Wang Fu classified dreams into ten categories, analyzed the causes of the dreams occurring, and described how to interpret the dreams.
He said dreams and reality are related, so dream interpretation and prediction of one’s dream are very important. He, however, explained that the most important thing among them is the attitude of the dreamer. Wang Fu’s objective attitude toward dreams, his introduction to the methods of divination and his description of dreams provide important implications for the study of dreams in ancient China. This study could be the basic research for East and West dream comparative studies.
