ABSTRACT

In the curative food culture in China, they semanticized colors a lot based on the view of universe with Yin-Yang and five elements, and applied colors to both foods and health as the tools to express the harmony and order of the universe. Color words on blue, red, yellow, white, and black are closely related not only to the Chinese food culture but also the philosophy of cure from the taste and nutrients of foods up to the functions and mental health, connecting to Yin-Yang and five elements. Cognitive meaning of color words appeared in the curative food culture is a dynamic cognitive system. Their cognitive meaning and various structures were analyzed in this study based on Lakoff and Langacker’s theory that it was affected by psychology, culture, society, and ecology related to the other cognitive areas. It is anticipated that the study results will help to understand the vocabularies, culture, theories, and ideologies, in an integrative way, and know about the Chinese way of thinking and philosophies of Yin-Yang and cure upon analyzing their usages of color words and lexical collocation in their daily lives. Also, it is anticipated to provide the objective study data demonstrating the status of color words usages and ratio based on the quantitative analysis.
