ABSTRACT

This article examines the changes in the acceptance of Western psychology in modern China before and after the Wuxu Reform. Before the Wuxu Reform, psychology as a mental philosophy was accepted by some American missionaries. Except for "Linghun xue 靈魂學", "Xinling xue 心靈學", psychological terms usually feature words based on traditional Confucian ideas such as as "Xinxing xue 心性學", "Xing xue 性學", "Xin xue 心學." Approximately during Wuxu Reform, Kang Youwei 康有爲 and Liang Qichao 梁啓超 accept the Japanese translation term "Shinrigaku 心理學" and pursue the translation of Japanese books. Since then, "Xinli xue 心理學" has been widely used as a translation word for "psychology" and scientific new psychology in the West has been accepted and widely spread in China in various ways through Japan. In conclusion, the trend of accepting psychology as a mental philosophy in China changes to the trend of embracing modern scientific new psychology after Wuxu Reform. In addition, psychological translation is mainly based on traditional Confucian concepts, and the term "Xinli xue" accepted from Japan after Wuxu Reform is widely accepted.
