ABSTRACT

Bertrand Russell takes the neutral position that humans are poised between goodness and evil at birth. According to Russell, building moral habits through ethical training is essential to becoming moral, since he thinks that human nature has flexibility, that goodness can be cultivated and that moral training is required. He is not so much well known for his opinions on education. In this paper I will offer what I understand to be Russell’s view compared and contrasted with Confucianism on human nature, while we explore how Confucius, Mencius, Kaozi and Hsun-tzu regard moral development. We will consequently see whose standpoint is closest to Russell’s position.
