ABSTRACT

Gonggan Sarang was a small theater built in a narrow space, but it was an important theater that inherited the achievements of the theaters of the previous era and contributed to developing the aesthetics of the small theater and clearly imprinting the role of the theater in our theatrical world. Unlike large theaters, where the seats and stage were far apart and a large proscenium stage was used to create a dramatic illusion, in a small theater it became difficult to create a dramatic illusion as the distance between the seats and stage got closer. Therefore, based on this change, it was necessary to create a unique aesthetic for the small theater alone. The works performed in Gonggan Sarang had built up the history of small theater performances by providing three-dimensional space utilization, creating a sense of immersion using a sense of unity with the theater audience and providing a new hearing subtlety. In addition, unlike the previous small theaters, which were limited to 'introduction of tradition', Gonggan Sarang showed an active and resistant use of 'the traditional' as well. As explained by a planner Jun-hyeok Kang, the projects of Gonggan Sarang as a small theater were oriented toward the process of “filling in the missing things that our society must have”, which could lead to breaking the existing framework and securing the diversity of art. The creators who could not secure a performance hall in the existing theater system or could not be defined by the existing framework could get an opportunity to perform in Gonggan Sarang, which meant expansion into a new framework.
