ABSTRACT

The present study analyzed how the writer Kim Woo-jin is being utilized as cultural content through his work Praise of Death, which was created with various contents. From written work to play, film and TV series, Kim Woo Jin’s Praise of Death was produced in various forms of cultural content. This was not simply due to the literary achievements held by the writer that is Kim Woo-jin but there was a lot of curiosity and creativity regarding the relationship he had with Yun Sim-deok, who he committed suicide with. The original story for creating the contents is the gossip regarding Yun Sim-deok and the records left by Kim Woo-jin. Hence, the affair between the two was received like an actual story as Kim Woo-jin’s records and the gossip regarding Yun Sim-deok were combined. The contents that were created at the time were based on Kim Woo-jin’s journal and records as well as Yun Sim-deok’s rumors to create a story. Kim Woo-jin was the son of a rich family in the Mokpo region as well as a genius writer of Joseon and is portrayed as the charming traditional male lead that can be seen in melodramas, who had conflicts with their father. Moreover, Yun Sim-deok was a confident modern woman and Joseon’s first ever soprano but suffers due to rumors. The two people recognize each other’s artistic talents and encouraged artistic activities to be portrayed as true lovers but due to this, his father and Jung Jum-hyo, who was married early on to Kim Woo-jin, become the antagonist. In such ways, Kim Woo-jin is a charming character content who allows the audience to imagine Joseon in different layers by showing both the literary world and the theatrical world of the colonial Joseon while showing the student studying abroad in Tokyo and the artist of Gyeongseong and also, creating a love triangle with a traditional woman and a modern woman.
