ABSTRACT

Diaspora, which means dispersion or migration, has been a academic subject in the field of musicology. Diaspora studies changed a concept of identity from naturally given identity to flexible and changeable identity and scholarly works have paid attention to contexts between home country, host country, and immigrant communities of host country. Diaspora studies could shed light on a new academic concerns but also contexts and perspectives. Most scholarly works on migrants conducted by Korean scholars have focused on Koreans aborad. However, diaspora studies provides important perspectives and theories as a way to understand multicultural society of Korea. Thus, this article aims to examine concepts that has been critically investigated in the field of diaspora studies. Examining concepts discussed in the studies of diaspora will provide a way to understand and interpret various music cultures of Korea theoretically.
