AB - Bilingual English writer Junot Díaz known as a Dominican American writer has discarded using italics in his novels such as Drown which have been normatively used to mark non-English languages as a foreign language in English writings. He calls his such writing practice as a political move to give his traumatic experience back to English-only -Anglo-white-Americans. The purpose of this paper is to argue that Díaz’s such move is rooted in his post colonial spirit to resurge the post colonial situation of the current normative English reading experience. For this aim, this paper analyzes his use of non italics for Spanish expressions in his short novel Drown and his interviews regarding his normative use of Spanish expressions in his English writings. Based on Critical Discourse Analysis which takes discourse as social practices exhibiting power relation, this paper has looked at the addressee relation and identity aspects of Díaz’s text and discourse.
