ABSTRACT

This study investigates Chen Tuan’s discussion of the fundamental and origin of the universe based on the Zhengyi Xinfa. There is no professional discussion of the fundamental and origin of the universe in the Zhengyi Xinfa. However, Chen Tuan reveals a view of the fundamental and origin of the universe by discussing topics related to “The number of the Great Expansion” and “There is Supreme Polarity in Yi.” He presents ‘Non-being (無)’ as the fundamental and origin of the universe, saying that the first number subtracted from the “The number of the Great Expansion” 50 is ‘Non-being’, the first number subtracted from 49 is ‘Supreme Polarity,’ the other 48 is a divination number. In addition, Chen Tuan refers to the content related to “There is Supreme Polarity in Yi,” and ‘Yi (易)’ does not mean ‘Changes-Yi (bianyi 變易)’, but ‘Supreme-Yi (dayi 大易)’, which means ‘Non-being’, and it is considered that ‘Supreme-Yi’ changes to become ‘Supreme Polarity.’ The Chen Tuan’s idea is that it inherited the view of “Yi apocrypha” (Yiwei 易緯) and follows the thought of Taoism that Being (有) comes from Non-being. It can be said that Chen Tuan is in the position of Taoism in terms of thinking about the fundamental and origin of the universe.
