AB - During the last decades, discussions of the maintenance and reproduction of domination in modern society have oscillated between ideas of coercion and legitimation. This oscillation seems to have originated from the fact that the relationship between the two major modes of power has not been thoroughly identified. This study probes the theoretical basis for identifying the relationship between coercion and legitimation in domination, while reviewing the arguments around the ‘Dominant Ideology Thesis’. This study will, first of all, examine Nicholas Abercrombie and his colleagues’ criticism of the Thesis as well as the issue of the transmission of ideology. Second, the study will induce a theoretical perspective for analyzing the correlation between coercion and legitimation, discussing the Marxian concept of superstructure and the Gramscian concept of hegemony. Lastly, it will deal with the material forms of ideology conjoined with the coercive dimension. Through this process, the study aims to cast light on the correlative relationship between the dimension of coercion and legitimation in the analysis of domination, while conceiving that the governed are not simple recipients of ideology, but rather active cognitive subjects.
