ABSTRACT

In France, enthusiasm for public speaking competitions has been on the rise since 2010. Started in Grandes Ecoles and universities, the phenomenon has spread to middle and high schools as well into the business circles, thus now reaching a wide audience. This rising interest of French for "public speaking" has materialized by the implementation of two reforms about the college certificate (2017) and the baccalaureate (2021). Eloquence is thus making a strong comeback in education. This study sets the objective of questioning the different experiences that were discussed during this colloquium "Thinking the return of eloquence and its teaching: history, meaning, form, issues", organized at IHRIM in 2020, and of evaluating the effectiveness of oratorical pedagogies tested in the field of college, high school and university. Also, we will be interested in the possibility that eloquence can be used as a method of learning language and literature but also as a method of expressing duties and civic rights.
