The purpose of this study is to establish global competency as a core competency that Korean language teachers should have, and to establish the categories and elements of global competency. Until now, research on the competence of Korean language teachers has been incomplete, and discussions have been conducted mainly in the category of qualifications. The core competencies that are important in competency-based education are competencies such as cultural diversity competency, intercultural competency, and global citizenship. Korean language teachers who operate Korean language classes rich in diversity should also have such competencies as core competencies, and this was called global competencies. The global competency of Korean language teachers is not a new concept, but rather a comprehensive concept encompassing multicultural and intercultural competency, multicultural or intercultural sensitivity, and global citizenship. The areas of global competence are divided into ‘knowledge, cognition/skill, value/attitude’. The elements of ‘knowledge’ competency are ‘language and culture of Korea and many countries around the world, universal human values, interdependence of global society, and global issues’. The elements of ‘cognition/skill’ competencies are ‘critical and creative thinking, interactive communication, conflict management, and rational problem solving’. The elements of ‘value/attitude’ competency are ‘empathy and respect, self-awareness and reflection, flexibility and sensitivity, open attitude, effort and practice to realize universal human values, interest in and participation in global issues’.
