ABSTRACT

This paper studies the Chinese education with a focus on “academic grammar”. Today, the necessity and importance of grammar classes in university-level Chinese language education are gradually deemphasized because it was difficult to limit the scope of grammar education for each class, and because grammar education was not considered essential as the number of early Chinese learners and students living in China for a long time increased. This paper explains that an “academic grammar” approach should be adopted in Chinese grammar education in universities. Academic grammar goes beyond pedagogical grammar, which is learned to merely improve Chinese speaking ability, and partially includes the theoretical and systemic linguistic grammar. Academic grammar is placed between pedagogical grammar, grammar for the improvement in the Chinese language ability and spoken Chinese, and linguistic grammar, which analyzes the theory and system of the Chinese language. Furthermore, the accuracy, level, system, practicality, and brevity of academic grammar is explained, and if Chinese grammar education is carried out through the academic grammar approach, the end results of the educational and theoretical approaches can both be gained. In addition, in today’s Chinese grammar education, each instructor utilizes different content, materials, and methods, causing differences in the students’ learned content and understanding levels. In order to address this problem, new Chinese grammar education methods and systems are needed. If standard Chinese grammar education is established based on academic grammar, new changes in the field of Chinese language education may be expected.
