ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to examine anaphoric expressions used in Korean Sign Language (KSL) and then to investigate what kind of differences the sign space represents in the referential relationship. As suggested by Ahn et al. (2019) to distinguish the function of anaphoric expressions in American Sign Language (ASL), this paper also classifies indexical pointing (IX) in KSL into IXNEU, which refers to actual referents in the neutral space in front of the signer, and IXLOC, which refers to an abstract location to be associated with a referent in the context. After being presented with the context of different conditions, a native KSL speaker was asked to judge their grammaticality, and it was found that the distribution and function of IXNEU and IXLOC, similar to ASL, were different in KSL, and IXLOC also showed the meaning of contrast between referents.
