AB - The aim of the ‘disappearing agent argument’ presented by Pereboom is to show that the control of an agent cannot be adequately explained from the standpoint of the event-causal incompatibilist libertarianism. This argument could be seen as supporting the theory of agent causation that accepts an agent as a cause in order to harmonize indeterminism and its control. However, in this paper, I will argue that the theory of agent causation fails to account for it, and show that the control of agents could be accounted for in terms of event causes without engaging agent causes. I think that if the agent’s personality or values causally contribute to the occurrence of a choice, the choice could be a product of the agent’s control or self-determination. Based on this idea, I will call an event that involves mental properties such as agent’s personality or values ‘e*’, and argue that the choice caused by ‘e*’ is the one by the agent’s control or self-determination. In addition, I will assert that properties should be viewed as tropes rather than as universals to account for the agent’s control or self-determination, so the trope theory plays an important role in explaining it and further in clarifying free will.
