ABSTRACT

We would like to examine the possibility of system theory of science and technology by showing that observers who replaced the subject around the “paradox of homo faber” are separated into observers of perception of psychological systems and observers of communication of social systems. The process itself to resolve the paradox justifies this separation, and the paradox of homo faber can be formulated as follows: ①Human nature makes artifacts. ②Artificial objects make human nature. ③Humans make tools, tools make humans. Like Russell's “Russell's paradox”, the “paradox of homo faber” is close to the “self-reference paradox” about all sets that do not include themselves as elements. Both of these paradoxes can be formulated as “X2 + 1 = 0”. This formula contains paradoxes, because when divided by X on both sides (when X≠0), it becomes X = -1/X and has X on both sides, leading to a self-referential and infinite cycle. Given that Luhmann can construct a “self-reference auto-poiesis system” by adopting Spencer Brown’s logic, the process of solving the paradox of homo faber captures science and technology on the horizon of system theory.
