ABSTRACT

Hermann Hesse's Damien is one of the works in which his philosophical ideas and artistic sensibilities meet. This paper will explore how piety and the unconscious interact with each other through the protagonist's journey throughout the work. "Damien takes us into the abyss of the self, and the wisdom and realizations we find there make us rethink our inner selves. The author depicts Sinclair's journey of growth as he realizes the importance of piety and finds new inspiration through his encounters with religion, art, and nature. This conveys the message that piety is not just a religious experience, but a deeper understanding of human nature. On the other hand, the power of the unconscious also plays an important role in Damien. The things that one realizes by plunging into the abyss of the unconscious are sometimes dark and ambiguous, but they play a key role in the character's growth and discovery of self. Hesse's theme is that through the liberation of the unconscious, we can achieve unexpected states of creativity and wakefulness. This provides a deep examination of how the unconscious guides and transforms us as we embark on our own inner journey through the work. In conclusion, the paper argues that Damien is a work that blends Hermann Hesse's artistic sensibility with his philosophical ideas, giving readers the opportunity to explore our own inner lives and gain new perspectives through Damien's eyes.
