AB - The aim of this paper is to examine the core arguments of monism and dualism concerning the ontology of art and reflects on the potential impact of AI art on the existing theories. So far, the dualistic views of Wollheim and Levinson, which are sensitive to the common-sense perspectives of ordinary appreciators, have been regarded as more persuasive, while Currie’s monism, despite providing a simple and consistent account, has been criticized as a counterintuitive theory that lacks supporting examples. There are two elements within Currie’s theory which are responsible for the criticism: first, that the artist is not a creator but rather a type-performer; and second, that a painting can have multiple tokens, just as a musical work can. With regard to these two elements, I argue that the AI artist is an ideal example of the ‘artist as type-performer’ and show that AI painting is ontologically similar to music. This means that the counterintuitive elements of Currie’s theory are, in fact, typical characteristics of AI art. In this way, I emphasize the necessity of reevaluating Currie’s theory in light of the emergence of AI art and seek to broaden the existing debate by connecting the characteristics of AI art to the traditional framework of monism versus dualism
