AB - This study examines the theoretical and historical dimensions of community in socialist cities and North Korean cities. To this end, the concept of community, socialist ideas, and how these are perceived by the North Korean authorities were discussed.
Socialist thought, which sought to overcome the contradictions of the capitalist system, was a modern and forward-looking idea, not a retro philosophy. As Axel Honneth argued, socialism was the spiritual child of capitalist industrialization. The founders of socialism, Marx and Engels, emphasized the formation of an ideal community (Gemeinwesen), but this was not a return to the pre-modern world; they sought to create a community in a new post-capitalist, socialist order.
In practice, socialist countries pushed for more efficient and advanced industrialization through planned economies, and with a certain level of development came the anonymity and impersonality of the city. At the same time, however, cities attempted to form various communities based on socialist principles. This research discussed the extent to which the socialist system creates a sense of ‘place’ for the formation of communities, as it restricts the power of money and the movement of individuals. It also examined how communities have been formed in North Korea in a socialist way and what the North Korean authorities consider to be the ideal neighborhood and community.
