AB - The purpose of this study is to analyze Park Chan-wook’s film “Decision to Leave”(2022) according to the reading of the ancient Chinese scripture Shanhaijing(山海經, Classic of Mountains and Seas). The reason I focus on “Shanhaijing” in this study is not only because the main character, Seo-rae, is Chinese, but also because the film borrows from its organization and narrative style.
This study analyzes the film “Decision to Leave” by dividing it into “Shanjing(山經, Classic of Mountains)” and “Haijing(海經, Classic of Seas)” to examine the geographical features and mythological elements of the film.
Although Shanhaijing(山海經) seems to play a very small role in this film, the overall organization of the film takes the form of Shanhaijing. Just as the “Haijing(海經, Classic of Seas)” recorded the stories of “others” outside the sea, this movie focuses on the stories of Haijun and the Chinese woman Seo-rae. The music, diction and other elements of this film show how the scriptures were formed and enrich their meaning. From the perspective of the Shanhaijing, the story of Seo-rae and Hae-jun is a love geography, a love scripture in which they found each other and made their way through the fog, consummating their love in a mythical way.
