ABSTRACT

This study sought to move beyond the limits of conventional political‐ and social‐scientific approaches by empirically examining the concrete effects of a humanities‐based intervention—philosophical counseling—on Korea's conflict structures. To this end, we implemented an explanatory sequential mixed‐methods design, conducting four weekly group counseling sessions (n = 30) and performing thematic analysis on session transcripts and reflective journals. We then administered pre‐ and post‐tests using three scales—Political Polarization, Cultural Self-Construal, and Philosophical Reflection—to the same participants in order to verify the intervention's effects. Qualitative analysis yielded four themes: self-reflection, perspective-taking, reconstruction of communal ethics, and conflict insight. Quantitative results likewise showed statistically significant changes on all three scales (p < .001). These findings suggest that philosophical counseling, as a thinking‐based humanities intervention, can transcend mere discussion or mediation to foster critical reflection on political polarization and help restore the possibility of coexistence with others.
