ABSTRACT

This study focuses on heavy-polluting enterprises, using 7,442 observations of listed heavy-polluting companies in China's A-share market from 2014 to 2023 to empirically test how digital transformation affects corporate financial performance, with a focus on the mediating role of green innovation. The results show that digital transformation significantly improves financial performance. Further analysis reveals that green innovation plays a partial mediating role—digital transformation boosts green innovation, which in turn indirectly enhances financial performance. The study offers new insights into how digital transformation drives financial performance through green innovation. It also finds that the positive impact of digital transformation on financial performance is more pronounced for non-state-owned enterprises. These findings provide useful references for heavy-polluting enterprises in their digital transformation and green innovation practices, and are significant for promoting sustainable development.
