ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the geomantic characteristics of four royal tombs of the Goryeo Dynasty - Ganeung, Gonneung, Seokneung, and Hongneung - located on Ganghwa Island. The Goryeo royal tombs in Ganghwa are thought to have been constructed for two kings and their queens, with site selection and design that appear to reflect symbolic intent. The jusan(主山) takes the form of Tamlang Mokseongche (貪狼木星體), displaying the dignified presence expected of a principal mountain in geomantic terms. However, the ipsuryongs (入首龍) are indistinct, and the burial mounds appear to have been artificially constructed on steep slopes, lacking even the basic conditions necessary for the formation of a hyeol(穴). Although the entombed kings held little actual political power, the tombs were constructed on terrain that would not have been considered appropriate even for ordinary burials. This suggests that political motives played a decisive role in site selection. The combination of the extraordinary circumstances of war, economic hardship, and the will of the supreme authority led to the construction of these tombs not on myeongdang(明堂), but on hyeongji(凶地). Such a decision may be understood as a deliberate act of site selection, in which geomancy was strategically employed as a means to realize the will of the supreme authority within the physical environment.
