ABSTRACT

Generative AI image services are spreading rapidly, yet users often cannot tell why a result differs from their intent or how to revise it. This study analyzes the eXplanation User Interfaces (XUI) of generative AI image services from both the supply and demand perspectives to identify the gap between them. The XUIs of six major platforms were classified into five explanation types (supply), and task-based observational interviews with eight users were inductively coded to derive their explanation needs (demand); the two were then contrasted. The results show that most users' explanation needs are not met by existing platforms, and that some users wished for support at the input stage rather than more explanation of results—which this study terms Input-stage Scaffolding. This study extends the discussion of eXplainable AI (XAI), developed mainly in decision-making contexts, into the creative context, and presents directions for XUI design based on the identified supply-demand gap.
