ABSTRACT
This study aims to examine the importance of voters’ political knowledge as a fundamental ground of the democratic development and suggests the additional functions of Voting Advice Applications(VAAs) as platform of providing political knowledge. As a policy consumer, voters are considered as “informed citizens” and their political knowledge with positive relations with education level and exposure of the media. Previous studies on policy-oriented election treated the voters’ political knowledge as a constant and with the certain level of political knowledged voters have been expected to cast their vote through the evaluation of policy and manifesto. This research focuses beyond European VAAs original matching function and shed lights on Korean VAAs limits and possibilities for knowledge platform. However, policy-oriented elections require the positive feedback effect between electoral candidates and voters. In order to achieve effective policy-oriented electoral result, well informed citizens are a necessary condition and voting advice applications can be a new tool to provide sufficient political information for enhancing political knowledge.
