Provenance and Concept of 10 Symptoms of Para-cold Damage(類傷寒) from Yixuerumen(醫學入門)

Objectives : This paper seeks to study the provenances of 10 Symptoms of Para-cold damage from Yixuerumen, and discovers the rationality and originality of para-cold damages recognized by Li Chan. Methods : The paper looks through the books referenced by Yixuerumen to investigate the source text for Yixuerumen’s Para-cold Damage chapter, and the contents of the referenced books will be compared to that of Yixuerumen. Results : The sources of the 10 symptoms of para-cold damage from Yixuerumen Chapter of Cold Damage can be traced to Leizhenghuorenshu (expectoration, indigestion, rising temperature due to lack of energy, and beriberi), Wang Zhen’s Shanghanzhengzhimingtiao·Xinzengxuleishanghansizheng(the infection in a boil, blood sattis, caused overexertion, and pox), and Liu Chun’s Yujiweiyi’s chapter on Common Cold. Here, Li Chan made his own addition of internal damage and damage of overworking. Li Chan seems to have considered para-cold damage not as a type of cold damage but as a “concept relative to the broader range of cold damage.” In reflection of this understanding, Li Chan limited the number of categories to ten in accordance with the developmental trace leading from Leizhenghuorenshu to Shanghanzhengzhimingtiao. When we understand para-cold damage as a “concept relative to the narrower range of cold damage,” it could be used as a mean as for “Wenbin diagnosis,” but Yixuerumen’s para-cold damage is only utilized for the “diagnosis of a broader concept of cold damage.”Conclusions : Li Chan deserves credits for his academic rationality and originality displayed by the method he used to form para-cold damages where he used real cold damage and para-cold damage as principles, by the division of para-cold damage symptoms into ten provenances, by the creation of the concept of para-cold damage, and by his broad collection of prescription and treatment corresponding to each type.

A Study on Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu

Objectives : Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu is a book that strongly influenced the following generations’ theory of five Circuits and six Qi. It is understood that Wangbing authored the book during the Tang dynasty, but another theory suggests that a nameless author devised the book falsely in Wangbing’s name. A comprehensive research is greatly significant in the development of the theory of five Circuits and six Qi. Methods : The study will focus on the analysis on the truth about Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu, its impact on the following generations’ theory of five Circuits and six Qi, the contents and comparison of Suwen’s xuanzhumiyu, and the 17 books and 27 chapters of xuanzhumiyu. Results & Conclusions : First, xuanzhu was authored by Wangbing sometime around 762 AD, and Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu was written in 690 during the rule of Empress Wu Zetian, meaning that Wangbing is not the author of Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu. Second, Wangbing’s style of writing is regular yet elegant, and keeps itself within the range of medical style of writing, but Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu is written in a very rough style, and finds itself within the range of Tao literatures and books on trickery. Third, Wangbing’s xuanzhu is a commentary on Suwen, whereas Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu is consisting of the theory of five Circuits and six Qi, and trickeries predictive picture. As such, the two books have entirely different characters. Theories that received relatively significant impacts to the following generations’ the theory of five Circuits and six Qi include Gandeokbu, Jeongwhadaewha, and the Calculation method of normal Qi. Suwen’s chapter on the theory of five Circuits and six Qi and Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu have many inconsistent and differing theories, leading the scholars to believe that they are dealing with different theory of five Circuits and six Qi which derived from separate schools of beliefs.

A Study on the Uterus in Korean Medical Literature based on its Meaning and Function

Objectives : The uterus plays an important role in the woman’s body. In Korean Medical literature, the uterus is mentioned in various contexts according to different perspectives on its meaning and function. An examination of these various contexts is crucial in understanding the meaning of the uterus and to better understand and approach woman’s body. Methods : Aside from the most widely used term Jagung(子宮), there were various terms used to refer to the uterus. Based on a list of these terms, the Siku Qianshu collection of medical literatures was investigated. Contents related to the definition, shape, location, function were extracted and examined. Results : Among the findings, first, there were various terms referring to the uterus similar to contemporary understanding. Some of them referred to the uterus as a whole, while others referred to specific parts, one of which is the placenta. Some reflected a broader perspective on the meaning of the uterus. Second, the functions of the uterus could be summarized as gate keeping, and the maintenance of uterine environment that is related to menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth. Third, based on the examination of the meaning of the uterus and its functions, perspectives on the uterus in Korean Medicine could be summarized into two. Conclusions : One viewed uterus as an organ dedicated to reproduction, similar to today’s common understanding. According to this view, uterus is a special organ specific to women, which functions as an incubator for the fetus. The other viewed the uterus as an intangible source of life in the woman’s body. As a general source of life to all human beings, it is not a passive organ but functions as an active source in woman's life phenomena. The two perspectives are not in conflict, but rather reflect the broad range of thought on the concept of the uterus in Korean Medicine. In today’s biomedical society, the diversity and flexibility of these perspectives could shed light on medical practices that have resulted from extreme views on the woman’s body.
