ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the effects of adolescents’ demographic characteristics, smatphone use, and health behaviors on generalized anxiety disorder(GAD), to provide foundational evidence for health promotion and policy interventions. Using raw data from th 20th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey(2024), a total of 54,653 adolescents were included in the analyzed. Variables included demographic characteristics, smartphone usage time, health behavior factors, and their association with GAD were examined using SPSS/WIN 26.0, with a complex sampling design, applying descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and linear regression analyses. The result showed that high school students reported higher levels of GAD compared to middle school students. Female students, those with lower socioeconomic status, those who experienced depressive symptoms or suicidal ideation, and those with higher levels of loneliness exhibited significantly higher GAD. The findings highlight the importance of preventing smartphone overdependence, fostering healthy lifestyle habits, and strengthening mental health counseling and support systems to improve adolescent mental health thereby offering valuable evidence for the development of future policies and practical intervention strategies.
