ABSTRACT

This study examined the effects of mindfulness and social-emotional competence on college life adaptation among first-year dental hygiene students. A total of 155 freshmen enrolled in a junior college dental hygiene program participated in the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire measuring mindfulness, social-emotional competence, and college life adaptation. Results indicated that mindfulness significantly differed by high school background and economic status. Moreover, social-emotional competence was positively correlated with college life adaptation. Regression analysis identified decentered attention, a subcomponent of mindfulness, as well as self-management and relationship management, subcomponents of social-emotional competence, as significant predictors of college life adaptation. These findings highlight the importance of enhancing mindfulness and social-emotional competence to facilitate successful college adjustment in the digital and AI era. The study provides both academic and practical implications by offering foundational data for understanding freshmen’s adaptation and for developing effective educational and counseling interventions.
