ABSTRACT

This study applied Q methodology to identify consumers’ subjective perception types regarding wearable devices as fashion items. The results revealed three distinct perception types. Type 1, the Practical and Function-Oriented Type, emphasized functionality, wearing comfort, and value for money. Type 2, the Fashion and Emotional Value-Oriented Type, placed importance on design, self-expression, and emotional satisfaction. Type 3, the Function and Health Management-Oriented Type, focused on health management, exercise-related functions, and real-time monitoring of physical conditions. The findings indicate that consumers perceive wearable devices not merely as electronic products but as products that integrate both functionality and fashionability. Furthermore, the value factors considered important differed across consumer types, suggesting the need for differentiated approaches in the design development and marketing strategies of wearable fashion products. This study is significant in that it classifies consumer perceptions of wearable devices and provides fundamental data for consumer-centered product development and market segmentation strategies.
