ABSTRACT

This study examined the structural relationship between parental support and career attitude decisiveness and the sequential mediating effects of self-esteem and social withdrawal. Data from 1,773 multicultural adolescents in Wave 6 of MAPS II were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping. Parental support was positively associated with self-esteem and career attitude decisiveness and negatively associated with social withdrawal. Self-esteem was negatively associated with social withdrawal and positively associated with career attitude decisiveness, while social withdrawal was negatively associated with career attitude decisiveness. The sequential indirect effect through both mediators was significant. These findings clarify the interconnected roles of self-esteem and social withdrawal and suggest considering parental educational support and interest alongside these factors in career support for multicultural adolescents.
