Contrast research of the Korean and Japanese Auxiliary Verb "-ɔ poda" and "-te miru" : Focusing on "-ɔ poda" which does not correspond to "-te miru"

In this paper, we considered the non-correspondence of "te-miru" and "-ɔ poda". "te-miru" is an auxiliary verb indicating an attempt, and the corresponding Korean form is "-ɔ poda". However, there are many cases in which "te-miru" and "-ɔ poda" do not correspond in actual use. This is a feature of "te-miru" that shows a big difference compared to other auxiliary verbs such as "te-iku", "te-oku" and "te-shimau", which was also found in a survey conducted by Suzuki (2017). As a prior study on the non-correspondence of "te-miru" and "-ɔ poda", Bae (1995) described five types;"humble expression of will", "meaning of assumption", "concession phrase", "soft command expression", and "meaning of experience". However, this study provides examples only and does not discuss grammatical features. In the present study, we examined all cases of non-correspondence, including cases that did not fit into the five types. As a result, they were divided into "emphasis on experience", "soft commands", "predicative concession", "humble will", "big assumptions", and "other usages". In addition, the reason why each type shows non-correspondence was clarified based on lexical and syntactical features. Furthermore, it was pointed out that there was a big difference between the usages in the frequency. In particular, we found that among the five usages "emphasis on experience" and "humble will" are found in Korean "-ɔ poda" but not in Japanese "te-miru", and these differences affect non-correspondence. Also we pointed out　that, "soft commands" "predicative concessions" and "big assumptions" have usages not only in Korean but also in Japanese, and the differences in usages between the two languages affect non-correspondence. In addition, regarding "other usages", that were not included in the five usages, it was pointed out that more than 70% of the statement of them are the first-person subject sentences, and many of them represent "attempt" with a decent meaning. In comparison, the five usages are derived from the weakened meaning of "attempt" and they are conscious of the listener.

Necessity of history education in Heritage Japanese language education : Focusing on the practice of activities with the theme of "Korean Envoys to Japan during the Edo period”

This paper is the report of activities concerned about the children from Korean-Japanese Multicultural Families, who are tend to suffer from Korea- Japan relations, receive their roots positively by practicing activities with the intention for those children to foster their pride as a bridge of friendship between Korea and Japan on the subject of “Korean Envoys to Japan during the Edo period.” There are five characteristics of the activity as follows. First, the use of re-written textbook of picture books. Second, using the way of the advantage of reading picture books. Third, playing the short drama. Fourth, the class was taught in a content-oriented method of teaching. Fifth, the children of multicultural families in Korea and Japan of consideration of educational subject. The followings are the five outcomes as activity achievements. First, as the awareness of Korean Envoys deepens, there was a positive change that children will become more active in learning history in the future. Second, the subject of the activity was "Let's learn from the Korean Envoys and get along with oneself and others", so children did not only learn the facts, but also receive it as one's subject. Third, Children of all ages and all levels were able to participate in the activities by conducting classes. Fourth, parents could naturally participate in the activities. Fifth, informing mothers that there was a history of exchanges between Korea and Japan through Korean Envoys. The five tasks are listed as follows. First, sharing the parish used in the activity. Second, the need to develop activities that will lead to the care of children's hearts. Third, the need for a common perception between parents and teachers, that education focused on raising up the pride that children themselves are bridges of friendship should be the top priority. Fourth, the need to support for Japanese wives in Korea who may be isolated from Korean society. Fifth, the necessity of presentation and instruction of various activities concerned about the subject of history.

A study on the vocabulary in the current National Language Textbooks for first-year middle school students in Korea and Japan

This paper aims to illuminate the socio-cultural characteristics of Korea and Japan in school textbooks by drawing on the significant differences between categories that appear in lexical distributions by areas of meaning of vocabulary in the current national language textbooks for first-year middle school students in Korea and Japan. Particularly, this paper has verified that as Korea introduced the free-semester system for the first year of middle school according to the current curriculum (2015), the total number of words decreased to 3/5 compared to the vocabulary in the previous textbooks, which is equivalent to about 9/10 compared to Japan. In order to examine the qualitative change, the lexical distributions in the major categories were compared according to Bunruigoihyou (1964). In the case of Korean textbooks, there were significant differences in the order of <1.3>, <1.2>, and <1.4> based on the total number of words. In the case of Japanese textbooks, significant differences were shown in the order of <1.5> and <1.1>. These features were also observed in the middle categories. In the case of Korea, significant differences were found in <Race･ Ethnicity>, <Human Beings>, and <Members･Position> in <1.2>; but the difference between the two countries has decreased significantly compared to the past. There was also no significant difference in <Family> and <Organization> in the middle categories, as well as <Monarch>, <Social Class>, <The Military>, and <Soldier> in the small categories. This can be interpreted as a desirable phenomenon. As for Korean textbooks, there were significant differences in <Duty> and <Economy> in <1.3>. Particularly due to the influence of high frequency words such as “Theft･Sponsorship Activity･Money･Donation” it is also characteristic that there was no significant difference in <Creation･Writing> as there was before. There were significant differences in 6 items in <1.4> too, but it is difficult to interpret it in socio-cultural terms due to the influence of specific high frequency words. As for Japanese textbooks, even distribution is found in <1.12 Presence or Absence> and < Action> in addition to <Instruction>, <Quantity>, <Space･Location> which are related to information literacy. In particular, various technical terms were used in <Organism>, <Space･Topography>, <Animal>, and <Nature･Object> as the present revision focuses on the global environment and ecology. A more comprehensive conclusion will be drawn in the future through analysis of texts and vocabulary before and after revision of textbooks in each country.

Language contacts occurring within linguistic landscape in neighboring regions of Korea and Japan

This study is conducted to discuss and analyze language contact phenomena focusing on the linguistic landscape of regions in Korea and Japan, that lie close to each other. The main findings are as follows: 1. Korean origin loanwords used in Japan and Japanese origin loanwords used in Korea share a common characteristic that most these words are related to food·dietary life. Korean origin loanwords used in Japan have an additional note in Katakana written above the corresponding Korean words while Japanese origin loanwords used in Korea are written next to Korean words. 2. The study has clarified the spread of the Korean dialect type. Both 지짐[tsidzim] and 저래기[tsʌrɛgi] are dialects originating from Kyeongbuk Privince in Korea, and are being used as Korean origin loanwords as a result of language transfer and contact in Japan. The usage of these words is not limited to Japan but have also expanded to Jeilongjjang Province in China and Pyeongan Province in North Korea. Such a phenomenon clearly shows the signs of linguistic expansion in which words travel across borders and spread to neighboring countries. 3. The use of Japanese origin loanwords used in Korea are prominently those that underwent the secondary derivation, such as 쟉크[tsak̕u] and 추리닝[tsʰuriniɲ]. The secondary loanwords such as 테이크아웃 ‘take out’ are continued to be used in present days. 4. The use of loanwords related to ‘food·dietary life’ is found in all types of the language contact phenomenon according to the report on current usage of loanwords categorized by their meanings. Also, the result displayed that ‘words related to humans’ are the most used among ‘concept nouns’ and loanwords in ‘daily supplies’ are limited to those that underwent the secondary derivation. Both findings evidently support the result of preceding studies. Overall, the result confirmed that Hangeul-Japanese words (Japanese words written in Hangeul) are used in various forms within their semantic category. These findings clarify that the usage of these loanwords is concentrated on those closely related to daily life.

Comparison of Celebrities’ Compliment Responses at the award ceremonies between Japanese and Korean

This article clarifies and compares the features of celebrities’ compliment responses at award ceremonies between Japanese and Korean. First of all, the topics of compliment are classified into belonging, appearance, ability, character, persons concerned, and work because of the possibility which there are the differences of the compliment responses depends on the topics. Secondly, the responses to compliments are divided into ‘language components’ and ‘non-language and paralanguage components’; the former is classified into affirmative, denial, and avoidance, and the latter are classified into affirmative and denial. Concerning the classification of the topics to praise. in the case of Japanese, it shows that ability>appearance>work>belonging=characeter>persons concerned, and in the case of Korean, ability>appearance>belonging>character; therefore, both in Japan and South Korea, there are the most abilities and the second most appearance. Also, as a result of the analysis of the praise response strategy, Japan had 16 affirmative strategies, 6 denials, and 14 avoidances, and South Korea had 14 affirmatives, 4 denials, and 14 avoidances, and both in Japan and South Korea, there are fewer denial strategies. Moreover, one of the reasons why many affirmative strategies are used both in Japan and Korea is that participants attend the award ceremonies because they praised their abilities and performances. Besides, the tendency of using a lot of affirmative strategies for the compliments of appearance is the effect of the change in awareness which was pointed out by the earlier work. On the other hand, the features of the celebrities’ responses to praise is that they are aware of being seen by the audiences because they use the strategies which have humor and consideration for people around them. Regarding nonverbal behavior, eye contact is used a lot by both Japanese and Korean because it seems that they show they concentrate on the others’ talks and the attitudes to try to communicate through eye contact even though they get compliments. Also, in the case of Korean, they use nodding because they try to emphasize that they concentrate on the others’ talks much as eye contact and show their emotions.
