AB - 捷解新語에 나타나는「-を＋自動詞」의 형태는 지금까지 先学들에 의해 오용으로 지적되어 왔으며, 그러한 용례들 중에는「-を背く」의 형태도 나타난다. 본고는 당시의「を」의 의미·용법을 검토함으로써,「-を背く」가 당시의 일본어로서는 문법적이었음을 재확인함과 동시에, 「-を背く」와「-に背く」에 대한 山田みどり(1980), 信太知子(1981)의 선행연구를 재검토하여 당시 일본어에서 왜「-を背く」와「-に背く」가 공존하였는지를 밝히고자 하였다.
검토결과,捷解新語가 쓰여진 시기의 조사「を」는, 「そむく」를 포함한「会う」「乗る」「別れる」「離れる」등의 일부 자동사와도 공기했다는 점, 현대어에서 인정되지 않는 「二重を」구문이 존재했던 점, 일부의 상태술어와도 공기했던 점 등으로 미루어, 현대어의「を」격과는 달리 대단히 넓은 의미·용법을 가지고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 선행연구에 의해 지적되었던 捷解新語의「-を背く」의 형태는 誤用이 아니라 당시의 일본어로서는 극히 문법적이었음을 논하였다. 또한「-を背く」와「-に背く」가 混在되었던 것은 조사「を」의 의미·용법이 점차 축소되기 시작하였기 때문이며, 「を」가 점차 대상을 나타내는 격기능만을 갖게 됨으로써「-を背く」는 쇠퇴하고 결국「-に背く」만 사용하게 된 것이다. 즉, 조사「を」의 축소된 기능이 조사「に」로 흡수 되었다고 볼 수 있겠으며, 과도기적 현상으로「を」와 「に」의 혼재를 파악해야 한다고 논하였다. 따라서「-を背く」가「-に背く」로 변화 정착되어 간 가장 직접적 요인은 선행연구에서 論한 바와 같이 동사「背く」의 의미속성이 변화되었기 때문이라기보다, 오히려 조사「を」가 대상격 조사만으로서의 한정적 기능을 가지게 된 것이 가장 큰 요인이라 생각할 수 있겠다.
