ABSTRACT

This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of the request expressions of Korean and Japanese college students, focusing on gender differences, by considering the relationship between social culture, conscious attitudes, discourse content, and discourse factors that contribute to producing the request expressions in discourse. First, out of a total of 44 survey items, a difference between men and women was found in 17 items (38.6%) in Korea and in 13 (29.6%) in Japan. The research results are summarized as follows: In Korean culture, women tend to rely on their friends more strongly than men do, and they are more likely to communicate with friends in their daily lives. These differences in aspects of human relationships are deeply related to the difference between men and women in request expressions and conscious attitudes toward the act of request. A conscious attitude toward the act of request showed that women tended to be more considerate of their friends than men, and ask a favor of them less often than men. Women turned out to be more active in solving their friends' problems even if their friends asked other friends to do so. In the expression of request, it was also found that women tended to ask for requests with a clear explanation of conditions or situations involved, etc., compared to men, and women are more likely than men to feel sorry for themselves when they refuse a friend's request. On the other hand, it was found that the characteristics of Korean women in the expression of rejection was that when they say no, they tend to refuse by explaining the situation more clearly than men.
