ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to clarify how kanji words are processed in visual representationsed of Japanese sentences for advanced Korean learners of Japanese, through a lexical decision task of words with contextuality and phonological similarity between two languages. It was suggested that the activation and function of phonological representations in two languages differ from each other depending on the contextuality. Further, the phonological effect showed the same result, when kanji words were presented independently. From the analysis, (i) in the case of highly-constrained sentences, they were influenced by the contextual effect more strongly than the phonological similarity effect. According to the phonological similarity between Japanese and Korean, it was assumed that the meaning of the conceptual representation was directly approached through the phonological representation in Korean. On the other hand, in the case of words with low phonological similarity, the connection of phonological representations between Korean and Japanese is weak, but it was possible to directly approach the conceptual representations through the connection of phonological and conceptual representations between the two languages due to contextual information. (ⅱ)In the case of low-constraint sentences, the effect of phonological similarity between Korean and Japanese was confirmed. It was suggested that this result showed the same semantic processing process as in the case of kanji words being presented independently.
