ABSTRACT

The relationship between the antecedent and consequent of the ほど (hodo) construction was examined in this paper using the phrases “思うほど (omou-hodo)” and “と思うほど (to-omou-hodo)” as examples. In the case of the former phrase, omou-hodo, the consequent obligatory takes a negative form and cannot take a positive form. By contrast, in the latter, it can take both positive and negative forms. In short, hodo would have negative polarity in the omou-hodo phrase. Further, the difference between these two phrases lies in their concreteness. That is, whether the subject’s thought expressed by the antecedent is verbalized and documented in the sentence. The antecedent here provides referential information, which implies that the concreteness of the reference information is linked to the consequent’s acknowledgment (positive or negative) in the hodo construction. This suggests the generalization that the consequent would have negative polarity when the referential information is non-concrete, while it would have no specific polarity when the referential information is concrete.
