ABSTRACT

This research report focuses on the learning experiences of participants at Japanese-related events held at higher education institutions outside of Japan, where international exchange and Japanese language education are actively promoted. A survey was conducted regarding these events, particularly examining the responses of international students from Japan. The questionnaire results revealed that these international students found the Japanese-related events—where they could interact with local students—both enjoyable and meaningful. While improving language skills (specifically, English proficiency) was not a primary motivation for their participation, many respondents indicated that their motivation for language learning increased after attending the events. Additionally, it was noteworthy that living in shared dormitories with local students did not necessarily lead to a direct impact on their exchange experiences or the continuation of those exchanges. Another significant finding was that many international students from Japan reported a renewed appreciation for Japan and its culture. Looking ahead, a key challenge is creating more opportunities for international students from Japan to learn about the Philippines, even within the context of Japanese-related events, to foster mutual learning.
