ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to enrich the significance of teaching in Christian counseling both in its scope and depth by demonstrating that counseling and education can play crucial roles in helping counselee become a mature Christian. The purpose and principles of Christian counseling share the same biblical foundation with the ideal of Christian education. The main discussion of this paper consist of two section: First, we briefly review the change of counseling itself and its role in the changing society and derive the important feature of interrelation between counseling and education. In the second section, we show that Jesus as the healer is inseparably linked with Jesus as the teacher. The Bible places a premium on teaching and healing as the necessary ingredient to move people from disorder to order. Teaching is the therapeutic healing event in which insight becomes experience, impurity transforms into purity, and disorder changes into order. Jesus' character of the teacher plays an important role in his healing process. Therefore, it is expected that the Christian counselor serves as not merely a curer, but also as an teacher who gives advices and teachings. Because a role of proper teacher is to make counselee a mature disciple of Jesus, Christian counselor should have biblical norms to exert an effect upon a counselee.
