ABSTRACT

This research is to clarify application and understanding of short-term counseling in Christian counseling. According to the American Journal of Psychiatry, 1-2% of counselees require long-term counseling. Also, in the Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change, “we are unable to find the merits of longterm counseling.”The trend of modern counseling is short-term counseling. Short-term counseling has many other names‘: brief counseling’‘time-limited counseling’and ‘strategic counseling.’All of these, however, are similar. Most all counselors understand the meaning of ‘short-term’to be 5-8 sessions. The decisive merit of short-term counseling is to save time. This is proper for Christian counseling and crisis counseling. In short-term counseling, a counselor’s role is important. This is not client-centered counseling but counselororiented counseling. Actually, short-term counseling began as secular counseling not Christian counseling. Accordingly, Christian counseling ought to apply this technique biblically, and theologically. This research is not focus on the technique of short-term counseling but the application through understanding the notion of short-term counseling.
