ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to research adolescent narcissism relating to online game addiction and suggest applications to Christian counseling. In order to accomplish this research purpose, after confirming the importance of adolescent narcissism to understand online gaming addiction based on online game and adolescent developmental characteristics, this study found Kernberg's narcissism theory and explored narcissism metaphor and biblical healthy self-love in Bible. With the perspective bible's understanding of narcissism and biblical self-love as self-cure based on self-denial, this article suggested the limitation and usefulness of Kernberg's theory and applications to Christian Counseling. According to understanding narcissism as self-worship and healthy self-love with self-denial and self care, this study proposed the limitation and usefulness of Kernberg's theory as follows: First, his theory did not consider narcissism component and metaphor as a general self-worship metaphor and considered a real self excepting the relationship with God. However, he suggested useful theoretical framework to understand self-worship metaphor and all or nothing thinking connecting to polarized objects, importance to mourning activity and sublimation. Based on these findings, this article suggested specific application to Christian counseling as follows: Diagnosis of inflated self-image, approach to real and integrated self-recognition, biblical healthy self-love based on self-denial were needed to recover adolescent narcissism relating to online game addiction.
