ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to suggest a biblical approach for applying cognitive therapy to Christian counseling. More concretely, it investigates the biblical meaning of “heart” found in the Bible, and then, suggests an biblical approach to add motivational aspect to existing Christian cognitive approaches. To achieve this purpose, it first evaluates existing Christian cognitive approaches, and then claims the necessity of a biblical cognitive approach that may bring deeper changes beyond cognitive level in person’s life. Suggesting that David Powlison’s emphasis on heart may provide an alternative approach, the study investigates the biblical meaning of heart. The result of the investigation shows that biblical meanings of heart includes areas of cognition and emotion in addition to motivational aspect, and suggests that if these three aspects are explored together, it brings deeper biblical change in person’s life. The study states the benefit of this approach that the alternative approach may overcome reductionistic tendency of current biblical counseling. The study provides examples to apply this approach by analysing two biblical events in the light of the suggested approach. In conclusion, the study suggests a further research that employs single case study that investigates if this approach is workable in real counseling sessions.
