ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to apply Hargrave’s family forgiveness model to improve the quality of life by reducing the depression of grandparents in GrandParents-Headed Family and to consider the possibility of using the model in Christian counseling. Depression of grandparents begins with the misery of adult children, is affected consistently by them throughout grandchild-rearing and reduces the quality of life in old age, so counseling dealing with forgiveness is necessary because forgiveness effectively improves the quality of life by increasing positive emotions. In the ‘salvage’ stage of Hargrave’s family forgiveness model, the insight level leads them to see the conflicts with their adult children objectively and to consider the impact of their reactions on the present and the future, while the understanding level provides an opportunity to understand the adult child as a person as well as adult child’s position. This increases the likelihood of forgiveness, reduces negative emotions such as anger, and increases positive emotions such as feeling of liberation to improve the quality of life for grandparents. This model is worth using for Christian counseling for grandparent counseling, but Christian counselors need to use it rightly by helping grandparents recognize forgiveness not for themselves but for God who forgive them so that they willing to forgive their child as result of obedience.
