ABSTRACT

The purpose of this work is to review discourses on social integration and to explore its relevance as a framework in societal analysis on structure of poverty and its reproduction in certain society. Social integration is now a widely-used concept in poverty research. I believe that the concept as it has been used has limitations that have hampered its development as a theoretical concept and analytical tool of poverty research. The article works systematically through this theme, beginning with a brief review of two concepts: social citizenship and social exclusion closed related to discourse on social integration and then moving on to elaborate the analytic potential of the concept of social integration. Main argument of this article is that the concept of social integration serves to shift the centre of analysis on poverty from an economic perspective so that instead of focusing on cash benefits in isolation it becomes possible to consider poverty as a broader set of interrelated elements. Thus, the concept has the potential to say something new about poverty.
