ABSTRACT

Teacher moonlighting is a perennial occurrence among teachers in Thailand. The phenomenal has raised some concern among education policymakers that teachers might be deprived of their effort in terms of teaching due to their burdens outside classrooms. In recent years, due to the higher cost of living the number of teachers who participate in part-time jobs such as tutoring, selling food and products, and other miscellaneous jobs has increased significantly. This study finds that teacher’s economic status such as official salaries and their indebtedness are highly significant and associated with most of the moonlighting activities of teacher. However, it will not affect the prevalence of tutoring activities since they are motivated by other factors. Therefore, Thai government’s debt relief program for teacher will reduce the likelihood of teacher having part-time jobs except in tutoring.
