ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to develop the variables and indices for the performance evaluation of social enterprises and to suggest ways to apply them to practice, taking into the type of social enterprises consideration. To the end, this article begins with a discussion on the term ‘social enterprise’ and then examines the contemporary situation of social enterprises in Korea. We also review the previous studies on the evaluation variables and indices of social enterprises or related institutions, and then points out their limitations from a practical perspective. We devises the variables and indices of performance evaluation for Korean social enterprises, paying due regard to the type of social enterprises. Finally we suggest guidelines to apply those variables and indices of performance evaluation to the real world.
