ABSTRACT

We use data from the 2003/2004 Nepal Living Standards Survey to estimate Engel curves as a function of income from international remittances and income from other sources. We use thin plate regression splines to analyze how these income variables interactively and nonparametrically affect consumption while controlling for the possible endogeneity of income. We also construct elasticities for consumption of various categories of goods with respect to remittance and non-remittance income. We find that in Nepal the elasticity of consumption is always much less from remittance income than from non-remittance income.
