ABSTRACT

In this study, we attempt to evaluate the relative importance of Saemaul Undong (SMU, or New Village Movement) projects in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which was officially recommended as a model community development movement by the United Nations. For this, the relative importance of SMU projects in this province was evaluated and a desirable direction for future projects was suggested based on Delphic Hierarchy Process (DHP) analysis targeting SMU experts. It was found that projects focusing on household income increases, environmental improvement in rural areas, and awareness reform projects in urban areas, were most effective and therefore should be a focal point of current SMU revitalization projects in the province. In addition, we suggest that projects which were motivated and supported by political interests and populism such as hosting the SMU Expo be rejected.
