ABSTRACT

Discrimination against migrant women is an important dimension of economic exclusion, such as under-employment and poor access to credit. Language ability is also a major obstacle impeding the smooth adaptation of migrant women to the Korean society. These factors bring about social problems by accelerating the poverty and maladaptation of migrant women. Against theses backdrops, the purpose of this article is to examine the contemporary situation of migrant women’s economic exclusion, analyze the influence factors causing economic exclusion, and suggest policy measures to make migrant women be included economically. To the end, this article first analyzed the contemporary situation of migrant women’s economic exclusion, and then delved into the dynamics of the relationship among the influencing factors on economic exclusion. According to the analysis, the following are statistically significant factors that arouse the economic exclusion of migrant women: educational programs, discrimination, educational background, language ability, understanding of the economic system, and household income. In particular, language ability and understanding of the economic system exert significant impacts on the economic exclusion of migrant women. This article concluded with the suggestion of policy measures to tackle the economic exclusion of migrant women.
