ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of urbanization on income inequality using unbalanced panel data from 29 OECD countries from 2003 to 2020. In particular, the linear and non-linear relationships are analyzed through the Driscoll-Kraay estimation method, which are spatial panel analysis methods that consider the cross-sectional dependence, heteroscedasticity, and autocorrelation of the panel model. As a result of the estimation, urbanization in OECD countries has an inverted U-shaped effect on income inequality. Income inequality increases as urbanization increases to 74.01%, and income inequality decreases as urbanization increases beyond that point. Countries with a low level of urbanization should come up with active policies to improve income distribution, and countries with a high level of urbanization should ensure that a virtuous cycle structure of sustainable urbanization and income inequality reduction is maintained.
