ABSTRACT

Per Albin Hansson was the most prominent political leader in modern Swedish politics. He served as the chairman of the Swedish Social Democratic Party(1928-46) and as the prime minister of the Swedish government(1932-46). In late 1920s and early 1930s, he transformed the Swedish Social Democratic Party into the united, politically strong, and dedicated reformist party. He rejected the traditional 'class politics' and instead accepted 'mass politics' for broadening political base of the Swedish Social Democratic Party. As the prime minister, he overcame the Great Depression by Keynesian macroeconomic policies, assisted by the minster of finance, Ernst Wigforss. And he rescued Sweden from the Second World War by firmly holding on to neutrality policies. His political line is characterized by mass politics, mutual understanding and cooperation with bourgeois parties and capitalists, dedicated holding on to democracy, and discursive strategy stressing the positive values of socialism. And his leadership style is characterized by popular appeal, broad-mindedness, and decisiveness. His political line and leadership style greatly contributed to the political success of the Swedish Social Democratic Party.
